- Laser Scattering – monochromatic laser light is focused onto the sample to generate the Raman signal
- Vibrational Spectroscopy – molecular vibrations shift the scattered laser wavelength leading to molecular specificity
- Optical Resolution – typical Raman linewidths of 5-15 cm-1 can be resolved with array spectrometers
- Signal Strength – Raman scattering is a weak process, high sensitivity detection is essential
