See the Universe in Exquisite Spectral Detail

Making the most of every photon

A good partner helps you make the most of every photon. Just as every star is unique, so are the needs of every spectroscopic telescope. At Wasatch Photonics, we work with you from the earliest stages of your project, drawing on our multiple design technologies and experience to create high throughput medium- to large-format VPH transmission gratings customized to your astronomical spectrograph. Our robust, durable gratings provide the broadband operation and tunability you need for maximum flexibility, and years of performance you can depend on.

Features & Benefits

  • Excellent 1st order diffraction efficiency
  • Broad operational bandwidth with angle tuning
  • Customizable in wavelength (320-2500 nm) & dispersion (150-6000 lines/mm)
  • Dimensions up to 300 mm; larger upon request
  • Multiple patented design technologies
  • Low polarization sensitivity, uniform efficiency
  • Robust design facilitates cleaning & handling

Angle Tuning to Span the Full Spectrum

Transmissive VPH gratings enable wavelength tuning by varying the angle of incidence, allowing targeted observation of specific spectral features. Overlapping gratings can be designed to cover 350–2500 nm with the desired dispersion, and multiple individually tuned gratings can be combined to achieve continuous visible and/or NIR coverage at very high resolution.

Superblazed Astronomy Gratings

Angle tuning to span the full spectrum

Volume phase holographic (VPH) gratings made from dichromated gelatin (DCG) have been key components in astronomical spectrographs for decades. Wasatch Photonics is committed to maximizing light throughput and quality through our VPH DCG gratings as we have done in many of the world’s largest telescopes.

VPH gratings can be optimized to work at wavelengths ranging from ~300 nm up to ~2500 nm with spatial frequencies less than 10 l/mm using our (LD) grating technology to over 5000 l/mm using super critical angle (SCA) grisms. By varying the angle of incidence of a VPH grating, the spectral response can often be broadened considerably using superblazing.
