Safety & Security

Instant point-and-shoot chemical identification

Trusted Supplier of OEM Raman Systems

Wasatch benchtops trusted for handheld raman applications

A suspicious substance discovered at an airport, an unlabelled chemical bottle in a laboratory, or a small plastic bag containing white powder, all illustrate the need to rapidly identify unknown materials on the spot, without opening the container. These are prime use cases for Raman spectroscopy in detecting potential hazards.

Raman spectra are highly characteristic of individual substances and are often referred to as molecular fingerprints. The spectrum of an unknown sample is compared against a library of reference spectra, and once a match is found, the substance can be identified. For handheld safety and security applications, Raman spectrometers must maximize optical throughput to enable rapid measurements, while also being robust and stable enough for field operation under varying environmental conditions. Reliable long-term calibration and manufacturing repeatability are essential to ensure consistent performance.
