Spectrometers & Gratings for OCT
Enabling Innovative OCT Solutions
Industry leading OCT offerings
Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT) is a non-invasive imaging technology that produces high-resolution, cross-sectional images, typically of tissue microstructure. It is often described as “optical ultrasound” because it uses light reflections to map internal structures, like how ultrasound uses sound waves.
At Wasatch we specialize in Spectral-Domain Optical Coherence Tomography (SD-OCT), also known as Fourier-Domain OCT. This is a high-speed, ultra-high-resolution imaging technique that uses a spectrometer to split reflected light into wavelengths and analyze them simultaneously. It is adopted extensively in Ophthalmology and is the leading inspection method for a growing number of nondestructive testing applications including laser weld monitoring.

OCT Principles
-
•
Low Coherence Interferometry - In spectral-domain OCT (SD-OCT) interferometry is achieved by a broadband laser source used in combination with a dispersive element spectrometer to detect the interference. -
•
Resolution Decoupling – Axial resolution is driven by the spectrometer bandwidth, whilst the lateral resolution is determined by the systems imaging optics. -
•
Scanning & Imagine Formation – Depth information is determined by a single 1-D amplitude scan (A-scan), whilst a brightness scan (B-scan) is a 2-D cross-sectional image created by stitching together a series of A-scans.
Why Wasatch for OCT
Trusted, reliable, vertically integrated OCT spectrometers
Vertical integration defines Wasatch’s approach to OCT
spectrometer supply: our patented, industry-leading VPH gratings sit at the
core of a broad, pre-configured Cobra series lineup. Built on opto-mechanically
robust designs, these units deliver high SNR and strong roll-off performance
for clear imaging. Add OCT-specific software development kits, internal
expertise, and high-volume manufacturing, and Wasatch becomes a dependable
partner for application needs at any scale.
Key OCT Parameters
Understanding the OCT spectrometer performance
Several factors influence OCT spectrometer and system
performance, including axial resolution, imaging depth, roll-off performance,
signal-to-noise ratio, and measurement speed. This section explains why these
parameters matter and how understanding them reinforces Wasatch as a trusted
OCT spectrometer partner.
