Full In-House Grating Design and Manufacturing

ISO 9001:2015 production of all original VPH gratings

Wasatch Photonics founders began writing volume phase gratings in dichromated gelatin close to 50 years ago. We draw on this experience, along with multiple patented designs and three distinct design technologies, to optimize each grating for our OEM customers’ unique application needs.

Our ISO-approved new product development process ensures all new gratings are designed for manufacturing from product concept, and are highly scalable and manufacturable with the highest quality. Wasatch presently delivers more than 20,000 gratings per year, with RMA rates significantly below 1%.

VPH gratings are made through multiple specialized steps, with dedicated in-process QC to ensure consistent, high-quality performance. Unlike competing technologies, no replication is used, so our gratings avoid common performance degradation. All production is handled in-house, except polishing and AR coating, which are performed by leading industry partners.

Raman Spectrometer Design and Final Assembly

OEM inside design philosophy

We developed our “OEM by Design” philosophy through decades of collaboration with customers, transforming research concepts into application-ready products. Along the way, we recognized the need for robust, thermally stable, high-performance components that deliver repeatable results from prototype to production and from unit to unit.

By providing OEM-grade products from the start, we accelerate development while reducing risk. Customers can use the same modular Raman platforms and ENLIGHTENTM software trusted by researchers for R&D and proof-of-concept work, with confidence that performance and analytical methods can transition seamlessly to volume production.

With more than 200 Raman OEM customers spanning the full product lifecycle, from initial prototypes to high-volume production, Wasatch Photonics is an established supplier of scalable Raman spectrometers and systems.

Multinational OCT Manufacturing

Global OCT manufacturing

The Wasatch Cobra-D 800 series instrument is the largest selling commercially available SD-OCT spectrometer for industrial applications. With patented HD grating manufacturing in Utah, USA and spectrometer final assembly in North Carolina, USA and Dublin, Ireland our ever-growing number of globally based Cobra-D 800 customers benefit from our multinational OCT manufacturing approach. With investments in automated QC fixtures and software, we continue to scale the OCT spectrometer manufacturing process.

Customer and Application-Specific QC

Building trust through the QC process

Whether it’s an OEM VPH grating, an OCT spectrometer or a complete Raman system with integrated laser, at Wasatch we tailor the QC process to maximize customer satisfaction. In gratings, we perform application-specific QC validation such as efficiency, wavefront and the impact on the M2 of a laser. In OCT, we track the unit-to-unit reproducibility of key specs, thereby ensuring consistency of performance within and between builds and locations. In Raman, we have the most comprehensive application specific quality control by using bespoke fixtures and software. A dedicated team of manufacturing engineers is responsible for all these aspects, involving them early in the OEM customer design process.

ISO 9001:2015 QMS Certification

Quality is the primary driver of customer satisfaction

At Wasatch Photonics, quality is the primary driver of customer satisfaction and loyalty, and our definition of quality goes far beyond the physical product. Through continuous process improvement, we seek to design superior products and deliver them on time and in specification to exceed our stakeholders’ expectations.

Wasatch Photonics’ facilities maintain a quality management system that is consistent with the ISO 9001:2015 International Quality Standard, assessed by Amtivo (USA) Inc. The Morrisville, NC facility has been certified for the design and manufacture of spectrometers and optical imaging equipment since November 13, 2017. The Logan, UT facility has been certified for the design and development, manufacturing, assembly, validation and testing of gratings since March 15, 2021.

Scalability and Investment in Manufacturing

Parent company support for manufacturing investment

One of the great benefits of having N FOSS & Co as our parent company is their financial support and commitment to the long-term health of the company and more importantly our customers. They know, as Wasatch knows, that scalability will be key to serving our ever-increasing number of gratings and spectrometer customers. Expansion to facilities is underway in each of our locations, whilst investments in supply chain and business process software will further facilitate the planned volume ramp up.

A commitment to quality you can trust

At Wasatch Photonics, performance goes beyond the product – it’s built into our engineering partnership, quality systems, and commitment to your success.
